Zircon crystal study could affect understanding of when life began on Earth
Extremely durable crystals called zircons cannot be used to date meteorite impacts, a Curtin University study has found, with possible implications for understanding when life started on Earth.
The study by Curtin University’s WA School of Mines, and published in the journal Geology, addressed how well meteorite impacts could be dated by looking at the damage done to zircons blasted by the massive shockwave at the time.
