Alex Atkins 1990 WASM Alumni Grad Dux of 1990 WA School of Mines Geology Graduates Winner of various awards & scholarships (BHP Utah).
Alex is a (recovered) mining engineer, geologist & geotechnical engineer with an MBA(Finance), Chartered Professional Fellowship of The AusIMM & is a Graduate of the AICD. She has lived mining in practice through the full valuechain (exploration – studies – development – production –closure) in roles that find mines, design mines, run mines, regulate mines & in the Big4’s auditing mining companies. Alex’s Australasian mining career is best described in 3 stages: 1) STEM MINING PROFESSIONAL – OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT (~15 years) – Operational mine design & management, mostly underground Au-Cu working for Placer Dome APAC (1st Class Mine Manager’s Tickets in 1998 in WA & 2000 in Qld). 2) EXECUTIVE GOVERNANCE, AUDIT & RISK (~15 years) – Mine management consulting (mine strategy, feasibility studies), Deloitte (valuations, audit & risk), and in a leadership mine safety regulation role (WA District Inspector of Mines). 3) EMERGENT NED &/or MINING EXECUTIVE – T-person with core STEM competencies & a good understanding of how a mining business operates & the business world around it. Focussed on risk, digital transformation & environmental social governance (ESG) in mining. As a risk practitioner, Alex wants to promote value-creative cultures & prevent value-destructive events in mining, particularly during the 4IR digital disruption & at the feasibility study stage (where unrealistic expectations are sometimes set up). She’s also keen to enable cultural change in the mining industry to ensure better outcomes in terms of social license to operate.
