Clive graduated from WASM in 1958 with a Diploma in Mining and a Certificate in Mine Surveying and was transferred to Central Norseman as a Surveyor. In 1960, he moved to Rosebery, Tasmania, as a mining engineer with EZ, and in 1963, he relocated to Cobar, NSW, gaining managerial experience as Operations Engineer.
In August 1968, Clive returned to Kalgoorlie with his family and was appointed Assistant Manager of the Mt Charlotte Project and soon became the Production Superintendent when the mine began production. Clive was involved with the first mass pillar blast at Mt Charlotte.
In February 1972, Clive accepted a senior appointment with Anaconda Australia Inc at the Anaconda/CRA Redross nickel mine. Towards the close of operations there, he transitioned to a role as Manager of Business Development in WA for Fluor Australia Ltd, based in Perth, a position he held for 19 years.
At the height of the gold boom, Clive returned to Kalgoorlie with a small entrepreneurial group involved in hard rock mining, milling, and exploration. In 1988, he was seconded to the UK to set up a European branch and returned to Australia a year later as a consultant based in Perth.
In September 1990, Clive was appointed General Manager of the Western Australian School of Mines Commercial Services Unit in Kalgoorlie, managing the Brodie-Hall Research and Consultancy Centre, which provided a range of technical services to the industry.
When Clive finally retired to Perth, he and his wife Jan devoted much of their time to charitable work associated with providing accommodation for the aged.
Clive contributed greatly to WASMA over the years and served as President (1972/73), Vice President (1991/92), and Councillor (1992/93 and 2008/2014). The WASMA Council presented Clive Life Membership in 2015, in recognition of his long-standing commitment and contributions.
Clive’s legacy is one of dedication and innovation. His contributions to WASMA and the mining industry are immeasurable, and he will be remembered for his professional achievements, generosity, and the lasting friendships he made.
Our deepest sympathies are extended to his wife Jan and family.
Vale Clive Annear.
